Turbo timer box, BMW part# 1 277 227

1. GENERAL
The TURBO AFTER COOLER fan should run for 4 - 5 minutes after you shut the engine off. But the engine must have reached 70C degrees centigrade (i.e. 158F) temperature before it does so.

1.1 The timer box pins and wires
Red wire (pin 2 on the box) has the constant +12 volts from battery. Red/white wire (pin 1 on the box) is going to the fan and it gives +12 volts to the fan. Brown is the ground (pin 3 in the box; brown is always ground in BMW). Blue wire (pin 4 on the box) is + positive from alternator. Brown/yellow (pin 5 in the box) is for the temperature sensor located beside the engine head. The sensor is NTC resistor (NTC=Negative Temperature Coefficient, i.e. the resistance will reduce when temperature rises).

1.2 How it works then?
The pin 2 has constant +12V and pin 3 has constant ground. Through pin 5 the box senses what is the temperature of the engine. When the temperature is above the certain level (70C, i.e. 158F) and the engine is cut OFF, the box connects the mains to after cooler fan. The box senses that the engine is cut OFF through pin 4 (+ positive from alternator). If the engine is turned ON again, the box will cut OFF the fan immediately, the box senses it again through the pin 4. So if there is +12V in pin 4, the fan does not start at all.

1.3 Wires in the connector
Red (pin 2) = constant + from battery, i.e. +12V
Red/White (pin 1) = +12V to the fan, from timer box
Brown (pin 3) = constant - from battery, i.e. ground
Brown/Yellow (pin 5) = from Temp sensor to turbo timer
Blue (pin 4) = + from the alternator

Remove the connector and check that the wiring harness and wirings are OK.
· Measure the red wire that between the wire and the chassis has +12V.
o If +12V => OK.
o If not +12V, check the wire and check the battery + pole connector and wires attached to connector.
· Measure the ground wire (brown) that between the wire and the chassis has 0 ohm.
o If 0 ohm => OK.
o If not 0 ohm, check the wire and check the battery - pole connector and wires attached to connector.
o Check also the grounding spot between the battery and fuse box. Loads of brown wires connected to chassis.
· Measure the blue wire, that between the wire and alternator + has 0 ohm.
o If 0 ohm => OK.
o If not 0 ohm, check the wire and check the battery - pole connector and wires attached to connector.
o
· The red/white wire is explained later on, as well as the brown/yellow wire.
HINT! Connect the measuring head’s of the multimeter together and measure the resistance of the multimeter (multimeter + measuring heads and their wires).
You find out the expected resistance value if the wire is OK.
If the resistance reading is (for example) 0.2 ohm, the same should be the resistance between (for example) the blue wire and the alternator + connector.

1.4 The application
This application/circuitry consists of:
· A temperature sensor in the engine head, located under intake tube # 6, above the starter motor. The sensor is NTC resistor (NTC = Negative Temperature Coefficient; the resistance will reduce when temperature rises.
· A small “cage induction motor”/”squirrel motor”/”squirrel cage” type of fan mounted behind the front bumper, middle of the bumper
· A turbo timer module (BMW part# 1 277 227). It is a little “black box” besides the drivers shock tower (between the coolant tank and hood latch)
· A ducting system with outlet pipe that provides cool outside air to a nozzle mounted underneath the turbo.

1.5 The Temperature Sensor
The temperature sensor “measures” the engine temperature. The set value is about 70C (158F).
· The temperature of the engine is below 70C (158F) => after cooler does not run.
· The temperature of the engine is higher than 70C (158F) => the after cooler runs for 4 - 5 minutes.
· For example: the car is started just to move a short distance
· Hence the “normal” operating temperature of the engine is not reached, the after cooler does not run
· The turbo timer box is interested of the resistance of the sensor (NTC resistor). So it measures it and when the resistance is below a certain value => temperature is 70C (158F) or more.

1.6 The fan
The fan is located behind the front bumper, just in the middle of it. It is a squirrel cage type of fan (cage induction motor).
If the fan itself is broken, it is probably either due to brushes or due to bearing(s). The brushes can be changed (as far as I can recall). You probably do not find a brush, which will fit directly and perfectly. But you will find a brush, which is close enough and will fit after modification. You might need to file it a bit or do some other kind of modifications but apparently will fit it in.
The bearing(s) are different issue. Those cannot be bought anywhere. At least I couldn’t find them. I found a working windscreen wiper motor from car dismantler/ stripper bay with exactly same kind of bearing. The car was an old “Opel” made by General Motors. Only one was failed so I but the “new” bearing in, assembled the fan and it has been worked ever since (more than 6 years).

1.7 Turbo timer
A turbo timer module (BMW part# 1 277 227) is a little “black box” made by VDO. It is located besides the drivers side shock tower, between the coolant tank and hood latch.
It is rather simple in electrical point of view and can be repaired. Most of the components can be easily bought from any electrical shop selling component’s to hobbyist’s/amateur’s.
The components inside are simple and easy to buy. They are also cheap. The type of the comparator is LM239 (quad voltage comparator). LM139 (meant for military applications, i.e. is the best one), LM339 (meant for “toys”), LM2901 and LM3302 can be used too. The only basic difference is the operating temperature they are meant to.
· I.e. LM339 is meant for “toys”, it is guaranteed that it works if the temperature is from +0C to +70C. So in a car application, it would not be a good choice. The other one’s can be used.
· LM139 and LM2901 are my choice, if I need one. The “best” and the “second best” in temperature range wise.
The 2 transistors are BC327, i.e. PNP general-purpose transistors. They are cheap and easy to get.
Also one CMOS 4040 (12-bit binary counter) can be found. This is also a common and cheap component.
Also 2 pcs of electrolyte capacitors 100uF/16V can be found, cheap ones too.
Generic timers can also be used in order to control the after cooler fan. Many kind of timer’s are available worldwide. If such generic timer is used, it most probably needs to be such an application that it does not follow the temperature. It will trigger the after cooler fan whenever you shut down the engine.

1.8 Ducting system
Check that the hoses from turbo after cooler fan to the turbo are OK. Check also that the nozzle mounted underneath the turbo is tight.
The hose from after cooler to nozzle damages easily when you take off/install the Air Flow Meter (AFM).

2. SYSTEM FAILED OR NOT?
2.1 How check the fan?
In order to check the fan, whether it works or not, you need to:
· Take out the turbo timer connector
· Check the ground (brown) wire with multimeter. Measure that the resistance is 0 ohm between the wire and the car chassis.
· Check that the red wire has +12V (should be connected to battery +).
· Connect the red/white and red wires together => if the fan is OK, it starts to blow.
· It will work even though the ignition key is not ON, hence the red wire is connected directly to battery + pole.
If the fan does not blow, either the fan is broken or the wires to fan are bad (red/white and brown) or the fan connector is loose, broken or corroded.

2.2 Fan has failed
If this fan has failed, and has been out of order for a long time, it is probably a very good idea to clean or replace the oil feed lines.
· Took it at least out and clean thoroughly, to “drown” it to (for example) gasoline or something like that.
· Let it be like that at least overnight and then flush it few times.
· After that, a pressurized air might help.
Why? As we all know, the meaning of the fan is to cool down the turbo charger. OK, it does not affect so drastically but some meaning it has because BMW engineers have installed it. Some “coking” has probably taken place in the oil line and in the turbo. So it is also a good time for oil change!
“Cooking” means, oil might be “burned” and stuck to the inner surface of the oil feeding line. You can be sure that inside the turbo center section you can found some, even though you have used good quality synthetic oil. The hotter the turbo, the more easily this cooking/burning will happen.

2.3 How to check the sensor
The sensor can be checked using a multimeter. Measure the resistance between the brown/yellow and car chassis (or brown wire).
If the sensor is OK, you can see/read some resistance value. The resistance will reduce, while the engine temperature rises. With a cold engine it is couple of hundred’s ohms, when the engine warms up, the resistance will reduce.
So measure the resistance, write it down, start the engine and drive a bit, then read the value again. If the resistance is smaller than earlier, the sensor is OK.
NOTE! Remember NOT to idle if you have an automatic transmission.
· It cannot be “infinite”. If so, it means that the sensor is bad or the wire is loose in sensor end or the wire is bad.
· Check that the sensor is on place, and then measure the resistance from turbo timer box connector (brown/yellow wire) and the sensor connector. It should be 0 ohm (or less than 1 ohm). If it is not 0 ohm (it is “infinite” or more than 1 ohm), it means that the wire is somehow broken.
o HINT! Connect the measuring head’s of the multimeter together and measure the resistance of the multimeter wires.
o You find out the expected resistance value if the wire is OK.
o If the resistance reading is (for example) 0.2 ohm, the same should be the resistance between the brown/yellow wire and the sensor connector.
· If the sensor connector is on place, and the wire is definitely OK and still the resistance between the brown/yellow and car chassis (or brown wire) is “infinite”, the sensor is bad.

2.4 Check the turbo timer box
The fan has been check? The sensor has been checked? Time to check the timer itself.
Put the connector back. But you need to jump two wires, while the connector is on its place, namely brown/yellow and brown wire.
Start the car for 30 - 60 seconds, when you shut the engine OFF; the fan should run for 4 - 5 minutes.
If not, the timer box is broken and you need to fix it, replace it with the similar unit or replace it with after market unit.

3. HOW TO REPAIR?
Opened the box (4 small screws) and took out the PWB (printed wiring board). Recognized all the active components, there are only few of them.
There are one quad differential comparator (LM239; compatible one’s are LM139, LM3302 and LM2901), one CMOS 4040 (12-bit binary counter) and 2 pcs of transistors BC327.
Measured (by using multimeter) all the diodes. If they are OK, check the relay as well.
Normally the relays are very strong and hardly ever failed but check it anyway. The only thing to check is the "pulling coil" of the relay. Measure the resistance of the “pulling coil”; it cannot be “infinite”, less than 500 ohms anyway.
Because all those (active) components mentioned above (2 pcs of IC´s and 2 transistors) are VERY cheap, change them in any case. At least they are all new.
There are also 2 pcs of electrolyte capacitors 100uF/16V, which can be found on the PWB. Change them too.
The price of all the components mentioned are (or at least should be) less than 10 US$ (maybe only half of it). Change them all because it would take too much efforts to locate the malfunctioning active component, with the same effort you will change them all.

Took out the components, one by one, solder the new one to the PWB, one by one. By this way you do not mix them and solder them to right places.
After the components have been changed, test the timer box. Install it to the car; drive a reasonable period so that the engine will warm up to normal temperature. Shut the engine OFF and find out whether the fan works or not.

3.1 Cruise control?
Some of the older model (E23, E24, E28 and E30) cruise control modules are containing same comparators (4 pcs) and some as cheap transistors. In most of the cases by changing those active components, the cruise control starts to work again. I have had opportunity to give this advise to many E23 owners around the world and they have saved their cruise control by doing so.
